ARCHITECTURAL STATEMENT:

The Hibbard House, located adjacent to Putnam Park, incorporates elements of both Art Moderne and International Style architecture. Constructed in 1936, the main rectangular block of the residence was designed by the Eau Claire architectural firm of Bayer and Nelson. (See Bib. Ref. B). Aloysius Bayer, who is listed in the city directories from 1929-1935 (his widow is listed in 1937), was first employed in the office of E.J. Hancock, an architect responsible for several buildings in Eau Claire including the Masonic Temple and the high school. Howard Nelson (he is listed in the directories from 1935-43) initially served as a draftsman for A.W. Bayer, but in 1937 was recorded as an architect, sharing Bayer's office. (See Bib. Ref. D).

The two-story dwelling is characterized by a flat, asphalt shingled roof and smooth plastered masonry walls broken only by narrow casement windows and scoring along the second level. Attached to the southern end of the original structure and forming the L-shape on the main facade is a complementary addition (c.1955) designed by Stephen Playter of the Eau Claire firm of Larson and Playter. (See Bib. Ref. E). The main entrance of the residence is protected by as flat roofed porch supported by a single post. On the south elevation, bands of windows dominate the design. Projecting wood elements provide a canopy-like effect over the lower story openings of the addition. The foundation is made of concrete and the main facade is orientated to the East. This residence is in excellent condition.

HISTORICAL STATEMENT:

Darrell Hibbard, general secretary of the Young Men's Christian Association, was listed at this address in 1937. (See Bib. Ref. C).
