Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the State Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation. The rearing station contains a number of connected ponds in addition to the concrete indoor rearing tanks and outdoor raceways. The ponds are largely man-made and their banks are lined with fieldstones. The Lakewood Rearing Station (33 16E-21) is located south of John Lake just north of Lakewood in Oconto County. This rearing station has a large rearing house that is directly connected with an intricate system of concrete raceways and natural ponds. The buildings are in average condition, but the raceways seem to be very well-kept. The rearing station is highlighted with a huge stone fireplace that is constructed in a rustic style. Resources on the property include the rearing house (AHI #32144), the concrete raceways (AHI #32146), a series of connected ponds (AHI #236283), a residence and garage (AHI #32139 and 32141), a former icehouse (AHI #23266), a headbox (AHI #236281), a modern storage building (AHI #236282), and several historic landscape elements including the stone fireplace (AHI #32142) and stone retaining walls (AHI #32145 and 236280). |
