NOTES
Additional Information:This two-story commercial vernacular building was constructed in 1895. The building is clad in brick and rests on a concrete foundation. The roofline has corbelling below the parapet. The second story features brick pilasters on the corners of the front (east) facade. Two sets of paired, one-over-one, double-hung, replacement vinyl windows sit in rounded openings with decorative wood headers above. The first story features a modern storefront that features replicated log cladding, storefront windows, and a modern glass door. Historic photographs suggest that the basement level could also be accessed from the facade, although that entrance has since been covered by sidewalk.

This commercial building was constructed by E.E. Durkee based on designs by architects Matz and Ruggles. It was owned by local businessman Dan Sullivan, who operated a saloon out of the main story when construction was completed in 1895. The second story held a tailoring business, and the publishers of Phillips newspaper The Bee operated out of the basement. The Bee was one of three newspapers that operated in Phillips at the turn of the twentieth century, and it was founded as competition for the more widely distributed but politically Democratic The Phillips Times.
