Additional Information: | The John D. Rowland House, constructed c.1895, is a two-and-one-half-story frame house with an irregular T-shaped plan. The house is primarily clad in vinyl siding. The side-gable roof is clad in asphalt shingles. The roofline also features a rounded turret on the northwest corner of the house. The front (north) facade features a shed-roof dormer addition and a two-story porch supported by rounded columns. The turret, dormers, and porch are clad in decorative wood accent siding. The side (east) elevation features a prominent entrance under a side-gable roof. Fenestration includes modern windows, including one-over-one double-hung sash, casements, and square and irregularly shaped fixed windows. At the time of its construction, the house featured many decorative details and was recognized as an important example of residences constructed in the aftermath of the 1894 fire. However, it has since been highly altered, including replacement doors in all visible door openings, the shed-roof front dormer addition, and an altered porch and roofline. John D. Rowland was a successful attorney in Phillips in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In 1889 Rowland purchased the local newspaper The Bee with E.W. Hands. After the fire of 1894, Rowland sold his share of the paper and opened a law office with M. Barry on the second story of the State Bank of Phillips (AHI No. 19161). Rowland was one of multiple leading businessmen in Phillips who constructed a highly detailed house for his family in the aftermath of the fire. |
