Additional Information: | ROUND ARCHED ENTRY [Date Cnst:/ BANK TELLER] 2019: Replacement windows and door added. This building is a small one-story bank building built in the commercial vernacular style. It sits on partially exposed fieldstone foundation and has a metal clad parapet roof. A corner entrance that houses the primary entryway is located on the southeastern corner of the building and is accessed by a set of concrete steps. It appears to have been altered with a modern door and modern infill in the rounded arch transom above the doorway. Minimal decorative brickwork surrounds the transom, typical of a commercial vernacular building. On the south elevation are two replacement one-over-one windows with transoms, and on the east elevation is a set of three replacement one-over-one windows with transoms. Window surrounds include stone sills, jack arches, and rectangular transoms. The parapet roof starts where four courses of stepped brick wrap around the principle elevations of the building (south, southeastern corner, and east). The brick pattern then returns to a normal stretcher between the two stepped cornices that frame the parapet. The north elevation is unadorned and contains one small altered window opening and an interior chimney. The west elevation is similarly unadorned and contains only a boarded up pedestrian entrance. The building was constructed in 1905 as the State Bank of Deer Park. The bank was officially incorporated on June 5, 1905, with a capital of $10,000. It operated as the State Bank of Deer Park until February 1970 when it merged with Union State Bank in nearby Amery. The building later served as the Deer Park Public Library prior to its current operation as a retail building. Preliminary research revealed little information about the period in which the building operated as Deer Park Public Library. However, it seems likely that it operated as such sometime between 1970 and 1997. These decades encompass the time after the bank merger and the year Deer Park constructed a new library nearby on Front Street. |
