Additional Information: | 2019 City of New Berlin survey recommendation write-up: Built into the hill, this 1960s Contemporary Style church is topped with an arched roof and is sheathed with a combination of board and brick and includes large expanses of glass. The three crosses sculpture was designed by Johnson, Schmaling Architects, Inc., of Milwaukee and added in 2008. A parsonage is located north of the church. Designed by Richard Scheife & Associates and completed in 1966, this church was built as, and continues to serve as, the Free Methodist Church. Prior to moving to New Berlin, the congregation worshipped at the former Swedish Methodist Church at 2124 W. Scott Street in Milwaukee. Groundbreaking for the New Berlin church occurred on 19 September 1965. As planned, it was to include a chapel, library and offices in addition to the 252-seat nave on the main floor, while the basement level provided for Sunday school and meeting rooms. Although the building permit cited an approximate cost of $130,000, the local paper cited a cost of $145,000. |
