NOTES
Additional Information:2019 City of New Berlin survey recommendation write-up: This 1960s Contemporary-Style school building is comprised of an inner core that rises two stories, while a single story wraps around it. Immediately adjacent is another one-story block that includes a central courtyard. The two-story section is comprised of concrete panels, while the first floor is sheathed with brick. A band of concrete trim with a raised geometric (concentric square) design runs along the top of the one-story portion of the building. Windows are located regularly throughout the building, with the W. Euclid Avenue-facing elevation including painted brick sections below the fenestration that feature different colors. The westernmost section of the school may be a slightly later addition but it too features the same trim as the main block and historic aerials confirm that it was built by no later than 1970. Despite its location in the City of New Berlin, Herbert Hoover School (named for the 31st President of the United States) was built in 1966 as part of the West Allis-West Milwaukee school district. The school, which does serve New Berlin students, continues to operate as such. Maradon Construction of Oconomowoc served as the contractor; however, the architect of the school remains unknown at this time. Based on the school’s appearance and modest similarity in trim to the Frank Lloyd Wright Junior High in West Allis (located at 9501 W. Cleveland Avenue which features a band of concrete with trapezoidal shapes), it’s possible that it was designed by Schutte Phillips & Mochon.

Permit dated 20 September 1965; estimated cost, $900,000. Footnotes for 2019 survey information provided below: Two images of the school are included in C.E. Osman, Public Schools of Milwaukee County: A Photographic Directory (Bloomington, IN: Author House, 2012), 348; Historic aerials available on the Waukesha County GIS website, https://prd1.waukcogeo.com/HTML5Viewer/?viewer=html_viewer_ext, Accessed August 2019. No permits were found in the school’s building file to suggest that the west block was built later. “Strike to Delay Opening of Butler School in Waukesha,” Waukesha Daily Freeman, 7 July 1966, 1 (includes reference to Herbert Hoover School).
