Additional Information: | Surveyed in July 2020 by UWM-CRM as part of the WisDOT USH 63 reconstruction project. This one story bungalow was built around 1910. The house is rectangular in plan and has a front-gabled roof. A gabled front porch occupies the south half of the front (east) elevation. The house is clad in narrow clapboards with flat corner boards. The roof has deep overhangs supported on triangular knee braces. The overhangs have exposed rafters and are set at a lower pitch than the main roof, creating slightly flared eaves. Fenestration consists of a variety of windows types and sizes. The front elevation has two wide cottage windows; the upper sashes of both have leaded glass decorative lights. The south (Elm St.) elevation has two leaded glass piano windows flanking the exposed brick chimney; a projecting dining room bay has a tripartite window consisting of a central cottage window with leaded glass upper sash, flanked by narrow one-over-one double hungs. The rear portion of the house contains one-over-one double hung windows. The front door has simple rails and stiles with a lower flat panel and an upper eight-light window with beveled glass lights. The door and all the windows are trimmed with sills, flat surrounds, and a modest cap molding. The front porch has small, tapered, raised panel square columns supported on brick piers. A rock-faced concrete block half wall surrounds the front porch. The house is set on a prominent corner lot which slopes down to street level. A knee-height fieldstone retaining wall surrounds the edge of the property along Elm St. and 5th Ave. On 5th Ave., a set of concrete stairs rises from sidewalk level and leads to the front porch. At the sidewalk, the stairs are flanked by concrete gateposts with beveled edges. |
