Additional Information: | Built circa 1880 to 1900 is a two-story Gable-front and Wing dwelling with Queen Anne details. It has a cross gable roof clad in asphalt shingles, decorative brackets under the gable, and wood trim. On the first floor of the gable-front is a one-over-one wood window, protected by a wood four-light storm window and surrounded by a wood frame. The dwelling retains its wood window sashes, casings, and trim, but the windows are covered with aluminum storm windows. The building is clad in wavy, painted, asbestos shingles. The main entrance is via a one-story enclosed front porch on the front elevation. A chamfered corner features decorative wood-work detail. There is a one-story addition on the rear elevation. Also located on the property are several outbuildings. The first is a raised basement dairy barn with a stone base, built into the north side of a gently sloped hill, circa 1870 to 1890. The southern elevation features seven window openings in the stone base that are not discernible from the public right-of- way. Glass block windows are located on the northern elevation and six-light wood-frame windows are located on the eastern elevation. The barn measures approximately 100 feet long by 32 feet wide with vertical wood siding and a metal gable roof with steel ventilators. Also present are a concrete stave silo and a small Gothic arch roof barn with a concrete base built into the bank built circa 1900. The H. Prideaux Barn represents the early dairy barn buildings built in the late nineteenth century, as Wisconsin farmers shifted from wheat production to dairy farming (Noble and Wilhelm 1995).The raised basement dairy barn is a rare example of the type within the area, due to its stone foundation, large size, and relative integrity. The building retains integrity to convey its significance. |
