Additional Information: | Surveyed by UWM-CRM as part of the Lake Michigan Pathway project. Property includes the park itself, a community center (AHI #242215), and a memorial marker (AHI #242216). Roosevelt Park is located on the south side of the City of Racine and is bounded by 21st St., Roosevelt Park Dr., 24th St., and Center St. The 13-acre park was initially established in 1931 as South Shore Park, when the City purchased the land from the Lakeside Improvement Company for $44,000. Improvements to the park were made over the next few years. In 1946, the park was renamed in honor of Franklin D. Roosevelt. A granite memorial was presented to the city by the local AFL and CIO unions and was dedicated in June 1946. The city built the existing community center in the park in 1971, and in 1974 it was renamed in honor of Dr. John Bryant, a local civil rights leader. |
