Additional Information: | 01/2021: The property comprises a dairy farm complex including four historic-age resources and a number of non-historic-age outbuildings and structures. The property includes a ca. 1915 two-story cube dwelling that may have historically exhibited elements of the Prairie Style (a) and an associated agricultural complex containing a ca. 1920 gambrel-roof bank barn (b) with a large side addition, a ca. 1950 gambrel-roof bank barn (c) with a large side addition, a ca. 1975 concrete silo (d), and numerous additional non-historic-age barns, storage sheds, and silos. The dwelling (a) features an asphalt-shingled pyramidal roof capped with a central deck and replacement vinyl siding and windows. The façade includes a full half-hipped front porch with replacement wooden posts, rails, and a wrap-around deck. Additions, including a gabled side addition with brick veneer cladding and an attached two-bay garage with vinyl garage doors on the east side elevation, have dramatically altered the resource’s original footprint and massing. The gambrel-roof bank barn (b) features a mix of original vertical wood and replacement corrugated metal siding, a masonry foundation wall, and a pair of hinged metal doors on the northern elevation with a concrete ramp at street level. The single-story appendage, located between Resources b and c, is partially below grade and features a low-pitched metal roof and fixed aluminum window on the northern elevation. No other details were observed from the public ROW. The metal-clad, gambrel-roof bank barn (c) includes a concrete block foundation wall. The lower portion of the barn is currently utilized for livestock. The barn includes a small hay loft door and a large shed-roof dormer with a roll-up overhead door, accessed via an exterior concrete ramp. The concrete stave silo with an aluminum roof (d) is located directly south of the bank barn (c). The numerous remaining outbuildings on the property are not of historic age and are of a scale that they dominate the property’s setting. According to the 1918 Grant County Plat Map, the Schouff (Schauff) family owned the property at that time, and it remains under the same family ownership today (Grant County GIS Services 2020). The dwelling is depicted on the 1918 Plat Map (Geo. A. Ogle & Company 1918). The family has been in Cassville since the 1880s, with numerous descendants documented through census research (U.S. Federal Census 1880). The dwelling (a) and bank barn (b) appear on the 1962 Beetown quadrangle map (USGS 1962). Review of historic aerial imagery indicates the presence of the dwelling (a) and gambrel-roof barns with side appendages (b and c) in 1955 imagery (NETR 2020). Although the silo is not visible in 1955 it appears to be of historic age. The additional resources currently on the property are not yet on site in 1982 aerial imagery (NETR 2020). |
