Additional Information: | 01/2021: The property includes a ca. 1910 two-story cube dwelling (a), a ca. 1910 basement barn (b), a ca. 1950 storage shed (c), a ca. 1950 linear-plan implement barn (d), a ca. 1975 front-gabled multi-purpose barn (e), a ca. 1950 shingled outbuilding of undetermined function (f), and a ca. 1950 arched-roof barn (g), associated with a non-historic-age barn, pole barn, and additional outbuildings. The heavily altered two-story dwelling (a) features a pyramidal roof with deck, a central brick chimney, and small projecting roof gables on the front and side elevations. Alterations include replacement vinyl siding, replacement vinyl 1/1 and casement windows, and removal of the original front porch. The rear elevation features a one-and-a-half story gabled wing addition with small shed and hipped-roof side additions that dramatically alter the building’s original footprint and obscure its original architectural detailing and fenestration pattern.
The basement barn (b) features a metal gambrel roof with hay hood, vertical wood siding, a formed concrete perimeter wall foundation, a hayloft door on the northeastern façade, and a large, ca. 1980, metal-clad, shed-roof addition with multiple stalls on the southwest side elevation. The small storage shed (c) features a front-gabled metal roof, wood siding, and a single door capped by a fixed dormer window. The linear-plan barn (d) has a metal, front-gabled roof, corrugated and standing-seam metal cladding, at least one multi-light wood-framed window, and a concrete perimeter wall foundation. A large, single garage bay with a roll-up door and a single-entry door are located on the southern façade. The second linear-plan barn (e) features a metal roof, standing-seam metal cladding, and a large single-entry bay. A large shed-roof addition extends from the eastern side elevation. The shingled outbuilding (f) is a front-gabled structure with a metal roof, a concrete perimeter wall foundation, a large open bay, and a single window. Adjacent debris from a razed building suggests the outbuilding may have been part of a larger structure. The ca. 1950 barn (g) features a metal arched roof, both metal and vertical wood siding, and a large central bay opening. It is located on an associated parcel on the opposite side of the road.
According to the 1914 Grant County Plat Map, Mrs. Kate Muench owned the property (Kenyon Company 1914). The dwelling (a) is depicted in the 1918 Plat Map (Geo. A. Ogle & Company 1918). The property was owned by John A. Muench, the son of Mrs. Kate Muench and labeled “Pigeon Valley Stock Farm” according to the 1918 Plat Map (Geo. A. Ogle & Company 1918). Research revealed that the dwelling (a), basement barn (b), storage shed (c), linear-plan barn (d), shingled outbuilding (f), and arched-roof barn (g) are visible in 1955 aerial imagery and on a 1962 Lancaster quadrangle map (NETR 2020; USGS 1962). The front-gabled barn (e) is not original to the agricultural complex and appears on site in 1982 aerial imagery (NETR 2020). |
