NOTES
Additional Information:This building was constructed as a tobacco barn c.1915 and converted to a dairy barn c.1940. It is rectangular in plan with vertical board walls and an asphalt-shingled gable roof with regularly spaced metal ventilators located along the length of the roof peak. Regularly spaced wall boards along the north elevation are hinged to open outwards, allowing interior ventilation for tobacco drying; a pair of sliding barn doors of board construction is located near the center of the north elevation. A shed-roofed projection wraps around the barn’s east and south elevations, with a milk house projecting from its northeast corner. Historic aerial images suggest that these additions were constructed between 1937 and 1955. The milk house has a concrete foundation, clapboard walls, and a metal-clad gable roof with projecting rafter ends; two 4-pane windows and a hinged door of board construction are located in the milk house’s west elevation, two 4-pane windows are located in its north and east elevations (the interior of the milk house contains a mid-1950s hot water heater and the remnants of milking equipment). The southern wall of the barn consists of the c.1940 addition which is clad in horizontal board siding with a metal-clad shed roof; regularly-spaced window openings are located along the length of the southern wall; the small area of exposed wall where the original tobacco barn projects above the addition is clad in metal siding. The exposed southern wall of the original tobacco barn is also clad in metal siding while the southern wall of the c.1940 addition is largely obscured by heavy tree growth. A concrete silo, constructed c.1960 is located at the west end of the barn and is connected via a concrete hyphen at its base. The silo features a protruding chute along the height of its eastern side, a domed roof, and metal rungs climbing up its western side. See also #243671, #243672, #243674, #243675, #243676
