| Additional Information: | 2022: While Gays Mill has long been nonextant, two small additions to the flour and saw mill still remain. The Gays Mills Store Houses (AHI No. 243702) are one-story, astylistic utilitarian buildings constructed c.1870 and located in the narrow area between STH 171 and the Kickapoo River, just west of the dam. Both are of masonry construction with rectangular plans on poured concrete foundations. The larger brick building features a side-gable roof covered in asphalt shingles with exposed rafter tails and an interior brick chimney. Windows are replacement, one-over-one, double-hung sash with stone lintels and sills. The front (southwest) facade features an overhead garage door. The door on the side (northwest) elevation has been removed. Damaged portions of the building have been infilled with concrete-block masonry. The smaller concrete-block building features a shed roof covered in wood slats. The window is multi-pane fixed and the side (northwest) door is wood. A third building once connected the two extant buildings, but it collapsed in 2017, causing structural damage to the two others. 2025: Resurveyed, appearance unchanged. |
