Additional Information: | The University State Bank of Green Bay was established in 1958. The bank constructed a new building, located at 1819 University Avenue, in a distinctive brutalist style in 1968. The project was designed by architect Heinz Brummel and conceptually included a plan for additional floors, additions, and a helipad. The bank changed its name to University Bank in 1974 and was later acquired by Norwest Bank in 1993, which in turn was acquired by Wells Fargo in 2004. Heinz Brummel was born in Munster, Germany in 1927. He studied architecture and carpentry following the end of World War II and moved to the United States in 1953, settling in Milwaukee with his then fiancé Marianne Bellmann. The couple had four children. After establishing a small architectural practice, he moved to Green Bay in 1960, collaborating with Jeff Nichols by 1963, and focusing on contemporary modern designs. Brummel opened his own office in Green Bay in 1966 and worked on a variety of projects his notable designs in Green Bay include the Fire Station No. 2, Martin Elementary School, the Green Bay Housing Authority’s Mason Manor apartments, and the University State Bank. Brummel died in 2016. |
