Additional Information: | This farmstead stands on the west side of Olden Road, about 0.6 miles south of Lincoln Road in Eldorado Township, Fond du Lac County. At the time of survey, the historic-age resources on the property includes a house, a gabled bank barn, and at least two farm outbuildings. Aerial photographs reveal that the farmstead has been present since at least 1937. The property was homesteaded as early as 1874, at which time a house and orchard were depicted on an 80-acre parcel in the southwest quarter of Section 18 owned by Thomas Merchant (Harney & Tucker). Merchant retained ownership in 1893, but by c1920 his relative Jos. Merchant owned the parcel, which had grown to 120 acres (C.M. Foote; Kenyon Co.). The house and barn on this farmstead were constructed before 1937. The large bank barn has a cobble and stacked stone base, vertical wood planks cladding the walls, and a gabled roof with fish scale shingles and lightning rods. The barn retains some historic windows along its base and lower walls, but other openings have been retrofitted or enclosed entirely. On its north end, it appears that the base of the wall is slightly bulging, and the sliding doors are inoperable, which indicates its structure may be compromised. The barn is no longer in use. Four outbuildings are also set on the property, including a small front gabled shed near the front of the barn, a shed behind the house, and two side-gable structures set behind the barn. One structure is a pole barn with two bays and sliding doors. The structure appears to be in fair condition, with worn fish scale shingles. It appears to be in use for storage. The second side-gable structure may have originally been a pole building but has been repurposed as a garage, with modern overhead doors in its large entry bays. Most views of the secondary buildings were obscured by the house, barn, and vegetation. |
