NOTES
Additional Information:Edward Sovik was born in China in 1918 as the son of Lutheran missionaries. He moved to the United States along with his siblings to study at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota in 1935. He graduated and began studying theology at Luther Seminary, but enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1941, serving as a decorated pilot in the Pacific throughout World War II. He enrolled in the architecture school at Yale University in 1946 with the intention of focusing on religious architecture. In 1953, Sovik partnered with Sewell Mathre and Norman Madson to form the architectural office of Sovik, Mathre, and Madson in Northfield. The office focused on religious and educational architecture and one of its first commissions was for the Calvary Lutheran Church in Green Bay. Sovik’s designs focused on a “non-church” approach that was flexible for both liturgical and non-liturgical activities within the same space. He also notably wrote and published Architecture for Worship in 1973, which reflected the same concept and became a popular text on modern church architecture. During this time, Sovik also taught at St. Olaf College in Northfield and was the recipient of the Edward S. Frey Award from the AIA Interfaith Forum on Religion, Art, and Architecture in 1981. Edward Sovik died in 2014.
