Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. Research suggests that the truss elements of this bridge were fabricated in 1891 for use as part of the CM&St.P Railroad’s Mississippi River crossing in Hastings, Minnesota and relocated to the current site in 1911. Located in the Town of Mazomanie (Dane County) at the Sauk County border, the bridge is a 2-span overhead Pratt truss with riveted and pinned connections and poured concrete abutments. Each span measures approximately 150 feet in length and carries a single railroad track over the east channel of the Wisconsin River. Each truss is comprised of six panels; truss components include built-up verticals and top lateral struts with narrow diagonal members and upper lateral bracing. Curved brackets with circular cutouts are located at the upper corners of each portal and provide a modest decorative element. Approaches are supported by timber trestles. Note: unobscured photos of both overhead truss spans were not possible at the time of the June 2023 site visit due to heavy foliage growing over the structure (the railroad tracks have been abandoned since c.2000). |
