WHEN HE WAS EIGHTEEN HE MIGRATED FROM GERMANY TO THE UNITED STATES AND LIVED IN ST. LOUIS AND MILWAUKE BEFORE HE CAME TO RACINE IN THE EARLY 1870S. KLINKERT WORKED FOR VALENTINE BLATZ IN MILWAUKEE AND HAD MANAGED THE HECK BREWERY HERE IN RACINE BEFORE HE BOUGHT INTEREST IN PHILLIP E. SHELLING'S CITY BREWERY IN 1878. ONLY A YEAR LATER HE BOUGHT OUT SHELLING AND BECAME SOLE OWNER OF THE COMPANY WHICH GREW INTO THE LARGEST BREWERY IN RANICE--THE E. KLINKERT BREWING COMPANY. KLINKERT BOUGHT A NUMBER OF TAVERNS AS OUTLETS FOR HIS LOCAL BRAND. THE BUILDING AT 615 SIXTH WAS DESIGNED AS A KILINKERT TAVERN AND POOL HALL. |
