Additional Information: | 2023: The house is a two-story cube vernacular form constructed circa 1890. The foundation is smooth concrete blocks, the exterior walls are rock-faced concrete block, and the hip roof is covered with metal sheeting. An internal brick chimney rises from the center of the roof. Characteristic of the two-story cube, the house is square in plan and lacks any surface ornamentation. The windows are placed evenly in each elevation and articulated by cast stone sills and flat lintels. Two, full-width open-air porches span the principal (east) elevation and are accessed by evenly spaced, yet slightly offset doorways in the first and second stories. The first-story porch is sheltered by a slight shed roof with a blank frieze atop turned columns; a squared picket railing spans the columns. Above, the second story porch has only a metal pipe rail. The original windows have been replaced with one-over-one hung sash windows throughout the two-story cube house. At the rear of the two-story cube, a one-story full-width rear gabled wing extends from the rear (west) elevation. The rear wing has been altered with a gabled secondary entrance foyer and a partial-width hip roof addition to the rear (west) elevation. The farmstead includes a historic-age house (246108), smokehouse (246109), tobacco barn (246110), garage (246111), and small animal barn (246112) all constructed prior to 1938 as well as a basement barn (246113), small animal barn (246114), hay barn (246115), and machine shed (246116) constructed after 1963. Edwin Sedevie, a first generation Bohemian American, owned and operated the farmstead from at least 1900-1930. The farmstead is associated with Bohemian settlement in the Town of Washington, La Crosse County which became known as Bohemian Valley or Bohemian Coulee. The Farmstead is further associated with agricultural practice of combined dairy production and tobacco cultivation in the Coon Creek Valley and the broader Northern Tobacco District. |
