Additional Information: | This 2-story Commercial Vernacular building was constructed in 1893 with rear extensions added c.1910 and c.1923. The building served as a furniture store and funeral parlor. The main building mass is of frame construction with the rear additions constructed of cream brick and red brick. The front elevation faces south and is asymmetrical in composition with a 1-story storefront extension to the east. The current storefront likely dates to the later twentieth-century and features an asphalt-shingled pent roof sheltering banks of metal-framed shop windows and a recessed center entrance; the surrounding wall space is clad in brick veneer. The second story of the primary façade is clad in aluminum siding and contains two pairs of 6-over-6 windows with decorative shutters. Exterior entrances to the rear additions are located along the west elevation (facing 4th Street). The entrance to the c.1910 addition is located at the north end of this elevation; this mass also contains original 4-pane windows at the first story and 2-over-2 windows at the second story. Historic records suggest that this portion of the building served as storage space. The c.1923 addition served as a purpose-built funeral parlor as a means of separating the company’s furniture sales from its funeral business. The west elevation of the c.1923 addition is Colonial Revival in style with a central wood-framed multi-pane door accented by a classical entry porch. Pairs of 6-over-1 windows are located on each side of the entrance with three pairs of 6-over-1 windows arranged symmetrically above. This entire façade is sheltered under an overhanging eave with large, curved brackets. |
