Additional Information: | 2023: This single-family residence is the former Wisconsin Central-Soo Railroad Line Passenger Depot. The depot was constructed circa 1909 at the easternmost end of Marcoe Street in North Fond du Lac adjacent to the Wisconsin Central-Soo Line railroad tracks. Based on historic aerial imagery, the depot was relocated to its present location at 1732 Minnesota Avenue between 1938 and 1951. As it stands, the building is two-stories tall and is rectangular in plan with stacked front-gabled roofs corresponding to the original depot and a second story addition. The building has been placed on a concrete block foundation. The original clapboard siding has been covered or replaced with vinyl siding. The original front gabled roof widely overhangs the building and features large knee braces along the gable end and eave walls. The eaves have been enclosed with aluminum soffit fascia. A second-story addition rises from the original roof and features a similarly sloped front-gable roof with moderately overhanging, closed eaves. The west-gable end faces onto Minnesota Avenue. The original window opening has been altered with two evenly spaced polygonal bay windows in the first story and paired one-over-one windows centered between knee braces in the second story. The former rail-facing eave wall is oriented south toward the property driveway. The original door and window openings have been altered and replaced with doors and windows that are dissimilar in material, function, and appearance. The projecting ticket window, which would have faced the railroad tracks, remains in the same location; however, the narrow train-viewing side windows have been enclosed and the ticket window replaced with glazed sliding doors. An uncovered, partial-width deck spans the south elevation from the sliding doors to the east end of the house. |
