Additional Information: | 2023: The two-story, rectangular-plan, Gothic-style Zion Lutheran Church was constructed in 1909. It is of brick masonry construction with a concrete foundation. It has a metal, front-gable roof and features a tower on the front (north) facade with gothic arch vents and windows, and brick piers at the corners. The primary entrance is a single glass doorway on the northwest corner of the original building with a small flat roof overhead. The side (west) elevation features four gothic-arch, stained-glass windows with decorative traceries and stone sills. Brick piers are between each window and at the corners of the building. At the rear (south) elevation are two additional entrance doors and an early, rear addition with a partial hip roof. Another addition is on the side (east) elevation of the original church building. The addition has a metal, front-gable roof and a pointed-arch window along its side (east) elevation. In 1884 Pastor Bernhardt Ungrodt led the first Lutheran Church service in Stetsonville. In 1885 members of the group incorporated as the Evangelical Lutheran Zion Congregation. The congregation outgrew the original wood-frame church (nonextant) located east adjacent to the present structure and made plans for a new building. The new subject church was dedicated in November 1909. The church initially conducted services exclusively in German until 1950, when new by-laws adopted the English language as common practice. In 1957 the building underwent its first major renovation, which included remodeling the basement and alterations of the entrances. In 2000 the church hired Siegel Engineering Inc. to construct the addition on the east side of the church. It houses a multi-purpose room with two offices and restrooms. The congregation celebrated its 120th anniversary in 2005 and remains at the church today. |
