Additional Information: | House – This large two-story foursquare with Queen Anne accents was built in 1910. An enclosed sunporch is set on the west elevation; it has a shed roof and a band of storm windows. An open porch spans the front of the house and continues around the side, ending at the sunporch. Two gabled dormers punctuate the front of the porch’s shed roof, and a larger gable stands over the entrance and steps on its east side. The gable-ends are adorned with fish scale shingles while the porch has turned posts and banisters, along with carved wood details below its roofline. The house’s front and side windows are flanked by decorative shutters. The fenestration on the front of the house is symmetrical, but the front door is slightly offset from center. The first-floor paired casement windows and the one-over-one sash windows throughout the rest of the house appear to be modern replacements. The front storm door is historic and decorated to match the porch, but the primary door has been replaced. A one-story addition is set off the rear of the house and its back porch has the same turned wood features as the front. Most of the foundation of the house is obscured, but one exposed portion indicates it is stone. The walls are clad in narrow lap siding. The tall pyramidal roof has cedar shake shingles. It is squared off at the peak, with a central brick chimney and an ornamental wrought iron surround. This building is one of several historic-age resources on this farmstead. It is likely this farmstead was established sometime after the house was built in 1910 and before 1938, but dates of construction could not be ascertained from a review of historic resources. The 1909 and 1928 county atlases include the portions of Rudolph Township that are south of the Wisconsin River (Sections 34, 35, and 36) with the Grand Rapids maps. The 1909 and 1928 atlases did not depict any houses or structures in the northeast quadrant of Section 35 where this farmstead stands. In 1909 this property stood on a 157.9-acre parcel owned by August Kempfert; in 1928 it was owned by Consolidated Paper & Pulp Co. Both maps depicted a homestead on the parcel, but it was set to the west of this property in the northwest quadrant of Section 35. The 1948 and 1957 county atlases do not label any landowners or depict houses in sections 34, 35, and 36; “Village of Biron” is the only notation on the Rudolph Township maps. |
