Additional Information: | 2023 - The Wisconsin Telephone Company was established in Janesville in 1882, expanded to Milwaukee in 1900, and was active in Green Bay by the early 1910s as the largest provider of telephone services in the city. It remained the primary provider through the 1980s. In 1969, the company moved its main office to the east side of the Fox River from its old location at a non-extant building at 205 S. Jefferson Street to 155 Huth Street on the southeast side of Green Bay. The new building cost $500,000 to construct. A large addition was added to the building in 1972 to contain the new electronic switching system (ESS), a solid-state digital electronics-based switch that no longer required human operators. This was the first ESS facility in Brown County. |
