Additional Information: | The north portion of the first-floor interior consists of the following: the bar, a kitchen, bathrooms, a gift shop area and a small room that functioned as a post office. The south half functions as the owner's residence and includes a kitchen, a bathroom, bedroom and a living room. Two wooden staircases with spindled railings run to the upper level that consists of eleven rooms. Although the second floor has electricity, there is currently no electricity. A farmer, Anton Schleis, erected this structure in 1905; however, by 1909, he sold the property to a friend, John Feller. Feller, who would become the president of the State Bank of Maplewood, operated the hotel with his wife, Mary, until he died in 1933. Mary maintained the business with the help of her son, George and his wife, Anna. The post office was run out of the structure by George from 1935 until approximately 1953, when he retired. Following George and Anna's retirement in 1964, the property was sold to Gerald Wardeck. In 1991, he leased the property to Marie Peters, who purchased it in 1996 and who continues to operate the bar. |
