"While the older homes of Milwaukee's south shore area cannot rival the grandeur of the north shore's mansions, many of them possess much grace and charm. A case in point is the former Brinton house, another small residence at 2711 South Superior Street. Perhaps the most attractive of them all, as regards both design and setting, is this white frame home on the South Shore Drive. Its construction date is uncertain, but its style points to the period 1865-1880. We know that the Starkley family lived here during the late 19th century, and it is possible that the house was erected for Joseph A. Starkley, c. 1878-79. Additions, designed by Milwaukee architects G. B. Ferry and A. C. Clas, were built in 1897. The home's appearance tells us that the owners have valued it, for it is admirably preserved and maintained." Pagel, Mary Ellen & Virginia A.
