THE LARGE, BRACKETED AND DENTIL-TRIMMED CORNICE PROJECTS FORWARD ON THE FACADE. ROUND-ARCHED STONE WINDOW HOODS FOLLOW THE ROUND ARCH OF THE SECOND STORY WINDOWS. OVER THE STOREFRONT, CANOPY SUPPORTS REMAIN ATTACHED TO THE BUILDING. A REAR ADDITION WAS BUILT AT AN USPECIFED DATE. ALSO APPEARING AT THE REAR IS A TWO STORY LAUNDRY BUILDING, CONSTRUCTED PRIOR TO 1884. (SEE BIB. REF. B). THIS HOTEL STRUCTURE IS IN GOOD CONDITION.

THIS BUILDING, KNOWN HISTORICALLY AS THE U.S. HOTEL [ADDITION] (SEE BIB. REF. A) AND AS THE WORLD THEATRE (SEE BIB. REF. C), SERVED AS A HOTEL FROM 1876 TO 1929 (SEE BIB. REF. A, C) AND AS World MOVIE THEATRE IN 1917 (SEE BIB. REF. C). THE STRUCTURE BEGAN ITS EXISTANCE AS AN ADDITION TO THE U.S. HOTEL, LOCATED AT 267 HIGH STREET (MAP CODE 43/16). "Built in 1875 as an addition to the U.S. Hotel by Cornishman Hugh Phillips. Glass blocks infilled the front during the mid-20th century but were removed in the late 1980s. The building was restored to its original appeareance in the 1990s.

261 High was the home of the World Movie Theatre in 1917. Over the years, it has also housed Wes and Nancy's Green Lantern tavern' Ridnour's Deli' Green Lantern Antiques; and the Green Lantern Studio."

From "National Democrat", April 8, 1875:
"Improvement - Mr. Phillips, proprietor of the U.S. Hotel, on account of increasing business, has begun to build a large addition to his hotel buildings. It will be a stone building, erected on the east sdie, two stories high, and a large portion of it will be used for bedrooms. The interior of the present building will be remodeled and the whole building supplied with all the conveniences of a first-class hotel."

From "National Democrat", December 3, 1875:
"A highly enjoyable party was given by some of the young gentlemen of the city last Tuesday evening in the pleasant rooms of the new addition to the U.S. Hotel."
