NOTES
Additional Information:A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. This small, independent automobile service station illustrates one stage in the evolution of what was at that time a new building type on the roadside landscape. More that just a gasoline depot, this structure illustrates the development of the full service station with its large repair garage clumsily attached to the pavilion type gas station that had emerged during the previous stage of development. Interestingly, this new building type was constructed in this case in an experimental construction material of the period, pericast rusticated concrete block, to give the structure an image of permanence that belied the newness of the automobile servicing industry. Not the oldest or most architecturally interesting gas station in WI, but nevertheless locally significant symbol of technology that would soon transform American life and forever change the role of small towns like Berlin in the American landscape.
