| Additional Information: | THIS TWO STORY STRUCTURE IS A BLEND OF COMMERCIAL VERNACULAR AND ITALIANATE STYLES. IT FEATURES A RECTANGULAR SHAPED PLAN CONFIGURATION, A STONE FOUNDATION, A COMBINATION STONE AND BRICK EXTERIOR, A STONE TRIM AND A FLAT ROOF. DISTINGUISHING THE SECOND STORY ARE ROUND ARCHED WINDOWS COMPLETE WITH MUNTON BARS. ACCENTING THESE WINDOWS ARE DECORATIVE STONE HOODS, KEYSTONES AND SILLS. STONE ALSO COMPRISES THE QUOINS, WHICH DEFINE THE CORNERS, AND A STRING COURSE, WHICH OUTLINES THE CORNICE. CAST IRON ORNAMENTATION IS PRESENT AT STREET LEVEL. THIS STRUCTURE WAS BUILT FROM 1867 TO 1868. (SEE BIB. REF. A). THE STOREFRONT WAS RESTORED IN 1991. THIS RETAIL BUILDING IS IN GOOD CONDITION. OVER THE YEARS, DIFFERENT BUSINESSES, WHICH HAVE OCCUPIED THIS STRUCTURE, HAVE BECOME IMMORTALIZED THROUGH THE HISTORIC NAMES BY WHICH THIS BUILDING WAS KNOWN. THEY INCLUDE THE WILLIAM CURRY BLOCK, AND THE RED LIBBY SALOON. IN 1871, THE BUILDING WAS OWNED BY A MAN NAMED WILLIAM CURRY. HE RAN A HARNESS SHOP THERE FROM 1867 TO 1876. IN 1884, THE BUILDING HOUSED A FLOUR AND FEED STORE. IN 1894, IT BECAME A FARM IMPLIMENT STORE. IN 1917, IT WAS KNOWN AS THE RED LIBBY SALOON. THE SALOON HAD STAYED IN BUSINESS UNTIL 1924, WHEN FRED JEUCH HAD TAKEN UP OWNERSHIP OF IT. (SEE BIB. REF. A, B). PLEASE SEE 217 COMMERCE STREET FOR A RELATED BUILDING AND HISTORY. (MAP CODE 55/12). 2012- "Built by William N. Curry whose parents came from Cornwall in the 1830s. Curry had his harness shop at 215 Commerce until abouth 1876; his wife, Mary Ivey, was the sister of Henry Ivey who had a harness shop on the other side of commerce street. Nicholas Hartert, an immigrant from Luxemburg, had a grocery business here by 1869; in 1860 he is listed on the census as a laborer, living in the household of Joseph and Sarah Gundry on Maiden Street in Mineral Point. Other businesses at these locations were Mack's saloon; a meat market; a farm implement store; William hack's Saloon; Red Libby's saloon; Fred Jeuck's saloon; Galle's Bar and Foods; Argall's bar; Bud & Grace Coogan's Bar; Studio 213; the Evening Pipe Shop; the Mineral Point Toy Museum; and Tunestam's Antiques." -from "A Field Guide to Mineral Point" by Nancy Pfotenhauer of the Mineral Point Historical Society, 1st Edition, 2012, Little Creek Press. |
