Additional Information: | The Hoppy's Bowling Emporium was constructed in 1942. However, little more is known about the business or the building's history. Today, the building is used by Monroe County Publishers. Because little historical data is currently associated with this building, and because of its recent construction, it does not meet the criteria for historical significance and does not fall into the exception criteria for properties constructed during the 50 year non-historic period. Located along the alley in the 100 block on the north side of West Oak, this one story Commercial styled building is a cream brick building devoid of ornament exceopt for a concrete lintel placed directly above the storefront and a plain concrete cornice, both of which extend the full length of the building. A contemporary front features double, large plate windows, and a centrally located metal and glass double leafed entrance door. A service door with a wood panel in the opening is located on the west end of the building. This former recreational building has been altered by the replacement of the original storefront comprised of a wood and glass double leafed entrance door flanked by two short rectangular windows. Furthermore, a service entrance has been inserted into the brick work on the west end of the facade. Built in 1942 with materials from the Interior Lumber Co. of Sparta, this building was constructed by local contractor Arthur Henningsen for Glen Hopkins. This Commercial styled building was designed by La Crosse architect Frank Fuchs. A recreational facility built during the influx of soldiers to Fort McCoy during WWII, this building, constructed to house the Hoppy's Bowling Emporium, originally had bowling lanes on both the main and basement floors. Hoppy's Bowling Emporium does not meet the criteria of the NRHP for architectural significance because it is less than 50 years of age. As a result, this building does not contribute to the historic character of the Water Street Historic District. |
