Additional Information: | This corner was the original home of some of Sparta's prominent hotels, including the Ida House Hotel, which turned into the Hotel Lewis and by 1931, it was known as the Hotel Garvin. The Hotel Garvin stood until 1965, when the First Bank of Sparta was built on this site. Because of this property's recent construction, it does not meet the criteria for historical significance and does not fall into the exception criteria for properties constructed during the 50 year non-historic period. This red brick bank building, located on the corner of North Water and Franklin Streets, is characterized by a masonry facade facing south and fronting on the parking lot. The facade is divided into six bays that are filled by six two-story shoulder arched windows with pointed arch tracery. The First Bank of Sparta was constructed in 1965 on the site of the historic Ida House Hotel. The drive-in addition was constructed in 1974. The First Bank of Sparta, established in 1858, was located previously at 106 South Water from 1864 until 1965. The First Bank of Sparta does not meet the criteria of the NRHP for architectural significance because it is of contemporary design and less than 50 years old. As a result, this building does not contribute to the historic character of the proposed Water Street Commercial Historic District. |
