Additional Information: ASMUTH WAS THE PRESIDENT OF THE MILWAUKEE MALTING CO., A FIRM THAT PROCESSED GRAIN FOR THE BREWING INDUSTRY. HE WAS BORN IN GERMANY ON DECEMBER 19, 1851 AND HE CAME TO MILWAUKEE WITH HIS PARENTS AS A YOUTH. HE FINISHED HIS EDUCATION IN MILWAUKEE AT THE GERMAN ENGLISH ACADEMY AND THE EAST SIDE HIGH SCHOOL. HE WORKED ODD JOBS BEFORE JOINING THE PHILIP BEST BREWING CO. IN 1871. IN 1876 HE STARTED A PRODUCE BUSINESS CALLED SALOMON, ASMUTH AND CO. AFTER SALOMON RETIRED IN 1878 THE FIRM WAS CALLED ASMUTH, GRAU AND CO. THE FOLLOWING YEAR THE NAME WAS CHANGED TO ASMUTH AND KRAUS. THE FIRM HANDLED GRAIN, HAY, AND FEED BUT SPECIALIZED IN THE SALE OF BARLEY. THE FIRM OWNED A LARGE FEED MILL AND OFFICES AT THE FOOT OF N. BROADWAY. IN 1879 THE FIRM BUILT A MALTHOUSE ON THE CORNER OF S. 1ST AND W. BRUCE STREETS. ABOUT 175,000 BUSHELS OF MALT WERE PRODUCED ANNUALLY. IN 1881 A BARLEY ELEVATOR WITH A CAPACITY OF 250,000 BUSHELS WAS ADDED NEXT TO THE MALTHOUSE. SEVERAL YEARS LATER THE NAME WAS CHANGED TO THE ASMUTH MALT GRAIN CO. IN 1898 HE SOLD HIS INTEREST IN THE FIRM AND IN 1901 HE BEGAN THE MILWAUKEE MALTING CO. ON THE CORNER OF E. BAY AND REYNOLDS STREETS. BEFORE LIVING IN THIS HOUSE HE LIVED AT 944 N. 11TH ST. HIS FIRST WIFE IN 1876 WAS JOHANNA STOLZ. SHE DIED IN 1887. IN 1889 HE MARRIED HER SISTER GERTRUDE AND THEY HAD 1 CHILD, ANTON WILLIAM STOLZ ASMUTH. General Construction Co. - Builder. Estimated original cost - $13,000.
