| Additional Information: | According to city records, the present-day building was erected in 1968. It was the former location of the Opera Block in Sparta, which burned to the ground sometime in 1929. Because of this property's recent construction, it does not meet the criteria for historical significance and does not fall into the exception for properties constructed during the 50 year non-historic period. Located on the southeast corner of Oak and Water Streets, this one-story contemporary styled commercial building is characterized mainly by plain unadorned cream beige brick elevations. The brick elevations are broken only by the metal and glass sidelighted corner entrance, which is flanked by a group of metal and glass windows. Constructed in 1967, this building was built to house the Jackson Drug Store. It was built on the site of the historic Opera House, also known as Greve's Block. In 1896, the building was remodeled and renamed Assembly Hall Block. Jackson Health Mart Drug Store is not architecturally significant because its is of modern contemporary design and is less than 50 years old. As a result, this building does not contribute to the historic character of the Water Street Commercial Historic District. |
