Additional Information: | HABS WI-333. A two-story frame commercial building covered with a variety of siding materials, including vertical boards, asbestos, shingles, and weatherboards. A pent roof divides the stories. A gable roof is concealed by the false front. In 1884, the building housed a barber shop (A), and in 1927 it housed a saloon (B). 1992- "Boomtown form building attained its present appearance after 1909. Prior to that time this lot was occupied by a Front Gable form two-story commercial building that was constructed prior to 1884. It is probable that the main east-facing facade of this building was remodeled in order to create the present facade, but it is not known how much if any ot this earlier building was incorporated into the present one. The main facade of today's building now has a Boomtown design, but the entire facade has been remodeled in recent years. The first story storefront now consists of an asymmetrically placed recessed entrance that is flanked by a band of small oblong single light windows. The base of this story is sided in fake brick veneer, most of the wall surface below the window openings is sided in vertical boards, and the entire story is sheltered by a full width wooden shake-covered pent roof. The second story has now been entirely covered over with wide metal clapboards and it has no openings of any kind. All of these recent modifications have obliterated what little historic or architectural integrity the building might once have had. Consequently, it is believed that the building can no longer be considered a contributing element to the district." - Prepared by Timothy F Heggland (1992). |
