Additional Information: | HABS WI-333. Two buildings are combined to form this store. One is two stories, covered with stucco. The one-story structure is constructed of block. A metal screen conceals the facade above windows. 1992- "Early photos show that as of 1909, three frame construction two-story Front Gable form commercial buildings were located on the site of the present building, but Sanborn-Perris maps show that by 192'7 the middle one had been demolished. Neither of the two remaining buildings were incorporated into the present buildings, which consist of an older twostory rectilinear plan masonry construction building to the south and a one-story rectilinear plan building to the north. The only portion of the original two-story building that is visible from the street is the second story of its north-facing side elevation, which is sided in stucco and has a stepped parapet. The one-story building has side walls constructed out of concrete block. 'l'he interiors of these buildings have been interconnected for a number of years and the unified east-facing main facades of both buildings are a reflection of this. 'l'he first stories of these facades date from the 1980s and both buildings have separate storefronts with large modern display windows and half canted entrance doors. 'l'hese storefronts are en framed by large concrete panels and both storefronts are sheltered by an arched full-width plastic or metal canopy. The second story of the main facade of the larger building is totally hidden by a curtain wall-like metal grill that dates from an earlier but modern remodeling, which occurred when both buildings were occupied by Gamble's department Store chain. The totally remodeled modern facades of these two buildings makes them non-contributing resources within the district." - Prepared by Timothy F Heggland (1992). |
