Additional Information: | Built between 1887 and 1891, this modest building is Commercial Vernacular in style with Italianate details. Like many commercial buildings of its period, the first floor is unrecognizable as a historic building. The second story carries the historically identifying features. The cornice projects due to three recessed courses of brick. Visually supporting the cornice are brick pilasters at side of the building and a series of corbels imitating high style Italianate brackets. The one over one double hung wood sash windows are crowned with shouldered segmentally arched lintels. Soldier course brick form the voussoirs of the arch. In the spandrel area between the flat window pane and the brick arch, a pierced wood panel provides further decoration. This feature eliminates the need for arched glass panes. The main entrance and original store front have been obscured with a modern pebble dash facade. This property is a contributing member of the Marshfield Central Avenue Historic District under Criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places. It is representative of the Architecture Theme of the Wisconsin Cultural Resource Managment Plan as an example of Commercial Vernacular architecture with Italianate details. The building's architectural integrity on the second story is high, while the first story alterations are reflective of continued use and changing stylistic preferences. Built after the fire of 1887 and before 1891, this building was occupied from 1891 through 1912 by a store selling boots and shoes. Between 1912 and 1925 B & S was replaced by a store. This property is a contributing member of the Marshfield Central Avenue Historic District under Criterion A of the National Register of Historic Places. It is representative of the Commerce Theme of the Wisconsin Cultural Resource Management Plan as an example of a retail building providing Goods and Services. |
