Additional Information: | Has been a foundry, knitting mill, and a bicycle factory. A two story stone mill building, probably the oldest industrial structure still in use in Rock County, this is a plain utilitarian vernacular structure. The window openings are round-arched and have been blocked on the west (river) side. The front facade has been embellished with an alternating solid and open balustrade, classical entrances and properly curved shutters. The Rock River Paper Company, established in 1858, built this building in the late 1850s. Later known as the Beloit paper Company, they occupied the building until the late 1880s. The building was then occupied by H. Rosenblatt & Sons, overall manufacturers, for a few years until they moved to the west side of the river in 1895. Goddard & Allen Company, bicycle manufacturers, located here in the 1890s. Later, Lipman Manufacturing was incorporated there in 1906 and remained in the building for many years. The present occupant, the Brown Swiss Cattle Breeders Association of America, purchased and remodeled the building in 1936. This national association has been headquartered in Beloit for more than 60 years and has been instrumental in the improvement of the breed. |
