NOTES
Additional Information:This two story commercial vernacular styled tavern features a rectangular shaped plan configuration, a stucco foundation, a brick exterior, a brick trim and an asphalt shingled gable roof. A parapet rises above the roofline and distinguishes the facade. The windows throughout the structure have one-over-one panes set within segmental arched openings. Brick lintels and projecting sills further accent these windows. This tavern was constructed in 1870, with an addition built in 1928. (See Bib. Ref. A). Extreme alterations took place in 1991. The building is in fair condition. Architectural/Engineering Significance: This property meets criteria C of the National Register requirements because the property retains enough of the character that it had when the town of Barton was growing and developing. This building contributes to the whole character of the Barton Historic District. (According to the Intensive Survey Form, this tavern was considered in 1987 to be contributing to the then proposed Barton Historic District). Historical Background: This structure served as the second Milwaukee House. Frank Eisenmann established the original hotel in 1853. This structure was replaced by the present building in 1870. The Milwaukee House was said to have been well supplied with orchards, vineyards, a barn, an ice house and a blacksmith shop. (See Bib. Ref. B). Michael Eisenmann was another individual associated with this building in 1870. (See Bib. Ref. B).
