NOTES
Additional Information:This two story Greek Revival styled house features an L-shaped plan configuration, a fieldstone foundation, a brick exterior, a brick trim and an asphalt and wood shingled multi-gable roof. The segmental arched windows on the facade are now boarded over, yet the former openings still retain their brick lintels, each of which has decorative raised brick dentil trim. Brick dentil trim is also visible at the cornice line and at the eave returns in the open gable end. The residence is in fair condition. It is related to a barn at 422 Commerce Street (see WT 57/25).

Historical Background:

Wensel Herbst constructed this dwelling in c. 1865. Herbst operated a cooperage business in Barton which supplied Barton Roller Mills with the wood barrels it used to pack its flour. (See Bib. Ref. A).

To the rear and east of his residence Herbst built a frame barn.

Architectural/Engineeering Significance:

This property meets cirteria C of the National Register requirements because the property retains enough of the charater that it had when the town of Barton was growing and developing. This building contributes to the whole character of the Barton Historic District.
