NOTES
Additional Information:This two-story Italianate house features a rectangular shaped plan configuration, a cut stone foundation, a cream brick exterior, a wood trim and an asphalt shingled hip roof. The building is an excellent example of the Italianate style in both plan and decorative details. Italianate elements include the formal balance of the house, the low pitch roof with a projecting pediment, wide eaves with paired brackets, decorative window hoods, and a decorative portico. This former single family residence now serves as a duplex; it is in good condition. Margaret F. Power owned the building in 1981.

Historical Statement: This house was built in about 1860 for D. S. Treat, a grocer. (See Bib. Ref. A, B). Subsequent owners included Hendry A. Doty, president of the H. A. Doty Box Company, and A. Webster, clerk of the circuit court.

The D. S. Treat House is architecturally significant in that it possesses high artistic values and it represents a type, period, or method of construction. It is historically significant in that it is associated with the lives of significant persons.

"Like a number of nearby examples, this Italianate style house was built of cream brick. The elaborate portico is carried by tapered posts and pilasters. At the entry, the double-leaf doors have molded panels and glazing. Also of note is the deep dentil course between the paired brackets, which spring from acanthus leaf bases. Doty was President of the Doty Box Company." The Courthouse Hill Historic District: A Guide, Janesville Historic Commission, 1997.
