Additional Information: | THE M17/6 PHOTO CODE IS FILED WITH THE MENOMINEE VALLEY INTENSIVE SURVEY NEGATIVES. SEE HAER FORM. This five-story warehouse and office has a brown pressed brick exterior with a reinforced concrete loft construction. A copper cornice is detailed with dentils and brackets, and projecting stone sills appear beneath the paired and quadurpled windows. A copper canopy is trimed in green art glass and luminare glass is in the transoms on the first floor windows. The building is architecturally significant for its intact condition and fine materials. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND AND SIGNIFICANCE: This building was the warehouse for Standard Paper Company, manufacturers and jobbers of papers supplies. Established in 1883, Standard had a sizable Milwaukee Business, as well as extensive trade throughout the northwest, supplying paper for most of the newspapers of the region. Although much of the stock (priniting, wrapping and toilet paper, towels, cups and bags) was distributed through the Milwaukee warehouse, the firm also drop-shipped from the mills. In the 1940's the building was used by lithographers, and was purchased in 1974 by Sax Arts & Crafts (wholesale and retail) for offices, wholesale and warehouse uses. Other than Sax's remodeling of the lobby and the fifth floor, the interior and exterior are virtually unchanged. |
