NOTES
Additional Information:A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. SEE NR NOMINATION FOR THE S.H. WATERMAN HOUSE. ARCHITECTURAL STATEMENT: A FRAME HOUSE, CONSISTING OF TWO AND-ONE-HALF STORIES TERMINATING IN A HIP ROOF AND ADJOINING GABLES. THE DESIGN IS DISTINGUISHED BY ORNATE CARVING IN WINDOW SPANDRELS AND GABLE ENDS. ROUND ARCHES FORM RECESSED BALCONIES IN EACH GABLE. THE ROUND ARCH AND STEEPLY PITCHED GABLE FORMS ARE REPEATED IN THE PORTE COCHERE WHICH EXTENDS FROM THE SOUTH ELEVATION. TURNED POSTS AND CARVING FURTHER DECORATE THE PORTE COCHERE. A NUMBER OF RESIDENCES OF THIS TYPE ONCE EXISTED IN OSHKOSH, HOWEVER, THIS IS THE ONLY ONE WHICH RETAINS THE PORTE-COCHERE AND AMOUNT OF ORNAMENTATION (RECENT RESTORATION WORK HAS RESULTED IN DISPLAY OF ORNAMENT, PREVIOUSLY CONCEALED BY SIDING). THIS IS A SIGNIFICANT EXAMPLE OF THE QUEEN ANNE STYLE IN OSHKOSH AND OF THE QUALITY CARPENTRY WORK PRODUCED THERE. HISTORICAL STATEMENT: ROBERT MCMILLEN, OF THE MCMILLEN LUMBER, SASH & SHINGLE COMPANY, RESIDED IN THIS HOUSE FROM APPROXIMATELY 1888 TO HIS DEATH IN 1898. MCMILLEN WAS ONE OF THE MAJOR LUMBER INDUSTRIALISTS IN LATE 19TH CENTURY OSHKOSH. MCMILLEN STARTED IN THE LUMBER BUSINESS IN 1858 AS A PARTNER WITH C. W. DAVIS AND R. T. MORGAN IN WHAT BECAME THE MORGAN CO. IN 1866, DAVIS AND MCMILLEN STARTED A SAWMILL WHICH BECAME THE R. MCMILLEN LUMBER CO.. MCMILLEN WAS IN THE SAME LEAGUE AS THE PAINE, SAWYER AND MORGAN COMPANIES.
