Additional Information: | CIRCULAR CNR TOWER W/WOOD SHINGLES AND CONICAL ROOF. SMALL PORCH. This is the same property as record 2928. This property hasn't changed since it was last surveyed in 1977. This small scale Queen Ann style house has complex roof lines, asymetrical composition, corner turret, porches embellished with spindle work and wood clapboard shingle siding. However, the porch railing appears to be entirely replaced and the porch to the east a modern addition. The house appears potentially significant for its association with Ernst Dumke who for 54 years ran ths stone grist mill across the street, one of the best known businesses in town. The mill was constructed in 1879 by the Reblitz brothers, powered by water carried by a large wooden pipe or flume. Dumke bought into the business in 1891: became sole owner in 1915; and ran the business with his son Ray until he died at age 90 in 1944. Ray Dumke ran the business a few more years. A fire destroyed the vacant mill in 1949. Ernst Dumke also was a machinist, millwright and gunsmith. In 2005, the house is still owned and occupied by a direct descendent. |
