Additional Information: | ELABORATE ENTRANCE WITH THREE-PART ROUND ARCH WINDOW AND DOORWAY. ROSE WINDOW IN GABLE. POINTED ARCH WINDOWS, 1 TALL & 1 SHORT. SQUARE TOWER W/PARAPETS & ROUND ARCH WINDOWS. March 2005-St. Mary's Catholic Church was built in 1915, after a fire in January of that year destroyed the previous church. The new structure was sanctified in 1916. The church is in the late Gothic Revival Style, built of dark red brick with stone trim. On the street façade, three lancet entries are surmounted by a large arched window and embraced by a short crenelated tower on the east and a 110 foot tall crenelated tower on the west. The nave, which seats 760, is illuminated by seven lancet windows in the east and west elevations. They contain a set of stained glass from Munich, Germany, installed in 1927. The apse contains an elaborate carved altar. Smaller carved side altars are located in the nave. Behind the church is a modern school and an older brick school with a large area of paved parking. The exterior possesses exceptional integrity, being almost unaltered from the time of its construction. Many Roman Catholic churches in the region have been altered with major additions in the façade. The interior also possesses good integrity. The principal changes have been the covering of an imitation rustic stone finish with off-white paint, the removal of the wings of the main altar and the replacement of original chandeliers with contemporary lighting. |
