Additional Information: | Excellent late Art Deco design. With three-story-tall main block facing S. Baird Street having two-story-tall gymnasium and auditorium wings at either end. The main building has a tall buff Markato limestone foundation which is echoed by the thinner limestone coping of the parapet. Windows are set in recessed bays having stepped limestone reveals and each bay is divided by three pilasters separating the center triple window group from the single side windows. The principal feature of the main facade is the slightly projecting shallow pavilion placed asymmetrically on the right hand side of the facade and which contains the principal entrance. The main entrance is set to the right of the pavilion and has a wide two-story-tall limestone surround topped by a incised stone frieze band. To the left of the entrance are five two-story-tall bays of which the first floor is much smaller and is subordinated to the taller second floor windows with their polygonal solid limestone balconies having massive curved brackets below. These windows are deeply recessed and have stepped limestone reveals, as well. A wide stone name band acts as a cornice for this pavilion. The auditorium is the north wing of the school and the main entrance faces onto Baird Street. It has three tall deeply recessed entrance doors with limestone surrounds and deep limestone reveals with incised fluted decoration. There is a curved stone legend above the center door. All doors and windows in the school have been modernized. The windows of the auditorium and the gym are filled with pebble dash panels. Green Bay Intensive Survey Phases 2, 3 & 4 |
