Additional Information: | Original cost $12,000. Original plans located at Wisconsin Architectual Archives (WAA 01-1098) 1924 brick veneered garage, 20x20. George F. DeWein, original owner (1924-1955) patent attorney, Allis-Chalmers (permit and CD) "This home was built in 1924 at a cost of $12,000 for George DeWein, a patent attorney at Allis Chalmers Corporation from 1904 to 1944. The brick veneer home was designed by the Milwaukee firm of Eschweiler and Eschweiler and is an example of Tudor Revival Style. The interior of the home includes a number of interesting architectural details, most of which have been preserved in their original form. The two-story living room features a beamed ceiling and a massive leaded glass window. This unusual window has human figures as well as a spinning wheel, a feather, a fan, a quill pen and a bird worked into the leading. There are also random inserts of stained glass. Other features in the living room include an impressive fireplace with the original screen and two false "windows" looking down on the room from above. A large finished room in the basement was described in the original plans as the "Dutch Room" because of the Dutch scenes depicted in the fireplace tiles. The original plank and beamed ceiling, plaster work and ceramic floor tiles all add character to this basement room. A large medallion is located above the fireplace. In the medallion is a bust of Ezra Cornell, who was the founder of Cornell University, the alma mater of De Wein and architect A. C. Eschweiler."
