2024 - Near NE corner Sission Rd and Prindle Rd, Alma, Wisconsin. One and one-half story school, front gabled, asphalt shingles, two colors brick in running bond, brick chimney, two doors, wooden four-over-four windows, brick foundation, year in stone.
Avon-Prindle School, located along the north side of Prindle Road, just east of its intersection with Sission Road. It is a one-and-one-half-story, front-gable brick building that originally had a frame belfry and steeple. It has an asphalt shingle roof and an exterior brick chimney that is attached to the center of the rear elevation. Two wood paneled doors with wood, three-light transom windows are located along the façade. The are set within segmental arches. A round window is located above, beneath the gable. A small, rectangular opening enclosed with plywood is located between each entry – a plaque with the name of the school may have been attached at this location.
The east and west elevations are identical. Each elevation has three, four-over-four, double-hung wood windows set in segmental arches, and a smaller, six-light hinged wood window at the southern corner of the elevation. Two of the windows along the west elevation have been enclosed or partially enclosed with plywood.
It is one of the few remaining examples of a one room schoolhouse – a rapidly disappearing property type – in Jackson County. Even though the belfry has been removed, it is recognizable as a historic, one room schoolhouse and retains other original, character-defining features such as its wood, double-door entry, wood windows and overall massing.
