Additional Information: A BRICK, TWO-STORY STRUCTURE WITH A FLAT SLOPING ROOF THAT HAS HAD A VERTICAL GROOVED METAL SCREEN PLACED OVER THE FACADE OF THE BUILDING. THE HISTORIC CHARACTER OF THE BUILDING HAS BEEN COMPLETELY ALTERED. SLEEP'S DRUG STORE, ORIGINALLY KNOWN AS VAN WAGENEN'S DRUG STORE WAS HISTORICALLY SIGNIFICANT TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF DARLINGTON'S COMMERCIAL DISTRICT BEFORE LOSS OF INTEGRITY. HENRY VAN WAGENEN, A PHYSICIAN AND PHARMACIST CAME TO DARLINGTON IN 1870 AND WAS ENGAGED IN THE DRUG BUSINESS THERE FOR 25 YEARS.(C,A) VAN WAGENEN BOUGHT THE OTIS BROTHERS AND PALACE DRUG STORE, NOW THE EYE CARE CENTER (LT 26-29) IN 1878.(C,F) HE MOVED HIS DRUG BUSINESS THERE. HE CONDUCTED HIS DRUG BUSINESS FROM THE PALACE DRUG STORE UNTIL ABOUT THE TURN OF THE CENTURY. IN THE MEANTIME IT IS ASSUMED THAT HE LEASED HIS OLD BUILDING, AND AT ONE TIME HAD THE BUILDING FOR SALE.(E) VAN WAGENEN'S SON EVERETT JOINED THE DRUG BUSINESS AS A PARTNER IN THE LATE 19TH CENTURY. ABOUT 1900, THE VAN WAGENEN DRUG STORE WAS MOVED BACK TO THE ORIGINAL STORE.(A) GEORGE OATES TOOK CHARGE OF THE STORE ABOUT 1911 AND CONTINUED THE DRUG BUSINESS FOR SEVERAL MORE YEARS.(B) THE DRUG STORES HAVE CONSECUTIVELY BEEN OWNED AND OPERATED AS A FAMILY BUSINESS. THE SLEEPS WHO CURRENTLY OWN THE DRUG STORE TOOK OVER THE BUSINESS FROM GEORGE GATES.(B)
