NOTES
Additional Information:A TWO-STORY BRICK 19TH CENTURY STRUCTURE THAT HAS HAD ALL HISTORIC DETAIL REMOVED WHEN THE STUCCO SURFACE WAS APPLIED TO THE 2ND STORY FACADE. TWISTED CAST IRON COLUMNS FORMING THE RECESSED ENTRANCE DOOR AND BRICK PIECES AT THE ENDS OF THE BUILDING ARE DETAILS REMAINING FROM THE 19TH CENTURY STORE FRONT. ORIGINALLY KNOWN AS THE HALLORAN HARDWARE, THIS BUILDING IS HISTORICALLY INTERESTING TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF DARLINGTON'S OLDEST COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS IN DARLINGTON. IT IS ALSO A SIGNIFICANT STRUCTURE IN THE SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT OF DARLINGTON AS AN I.O.O.F. HALL. EDWARD HALLORAN ORIGINALLY OF BOSTON CAME TO DARLINGTON IN 1867 AND STARTED A HARDWARE STORE SHORTLY AFTER. HALLORAN WAS ONE OF THE LONG-TIME MERCHANTS, ALMOST 50 YEARS OF DARLINGTON.(B) HALLORAN WENT OUT OF BUSINESS ABOUT 1915. FROM 1900 THROUGH THE EARLY PART OF THE 20TH CENTURY THE UPPER STORY WAS UTILIZED BY THE ODD FELLOWS, A FRATERNAL ORGANIZATION, AS A MEETING HALL. THE ODD FELLOWS DARLINGTON LODGE NO 171 WAS ORGANIZED IN 1869. ORIGINALLY THE LODGE MEETINGS WERE HELD OVER DRIVER BROTHERS DRY GOODS STORE ON SOUTH MAIN STREET, THE BUILDING NO LONGER STANDING.
